Mathew George, CFA

Vice President


Mathew heads TELUS Ventures, the venture capital arm of TELUS Corporation.

TELUS is a leading pan-Canadian telecom company with advanced offerings in wireless, data, voice, Internet Protocol (IP), IP-television, high-speed Internet and Health IT. TELUS Ventures invests in promising start-ups that will benefit from the reach and scale that TELUS as a $25+ billion Market Cap, full-service telecom provider can deliver. Recent Ventures' investments include Alithya, Mogo, Sprout and Vox Mobile.

Mathew is currently a Board Observer of Martin Dawes, Taulia, Teradici and Vigilent. Prior Board roles include Vision Critical, Clairmail (acquired by Monitise), Checkwell-Backcheck (acquired by Sterling Infosystems), Widevine (acquired by Google), Hostopia (acquired by Deluxe Corp), Digit Wireless (acquired by Nuance), Critical Telecom (acquired by BATM), Atreus Systems (acquired by Sonus Networks), Apparent Networks (now AppNeta) and the Arts Club Theatre Company (owner of the Stanley and Granville Island stages).

Before founding TELUS Ventures in 2001, Mathew managed the global co-investment and direct private equity investment activities of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, a sovereign wealth fund. Mathew started his career with Paribas Asset Management in Paris, followed by roles in investment banking with Barclays de Zoete Wedd and Warburgs in London, New York and Paris.

Mathew holds a Master of Business Management degree from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commericiales (HEC) in Paris, with specialization in Analytical Finance from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. His Bachelor of Technology degree is in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from the National Institute of Technology/Regional Engineering College, Calicut.

Mathew is a member of the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute, the Vancouver Society of Financial Analysts, the Canadian Venture Capital Association (CVCA) and the IEEE.


Alan Strachan, P.Eng.


A founding member of TELUS Ventures, Alan is responsible for evaluating all potential investment opportunities including technology and management assessments. Alan has more than 35 years of experience in data communications, software engineering, IP and fibre optic communications. Alan has worked in network planning, data communications, major account sales, special services, TELUS Internet Services, the TELUS IP-One (managed VoIP telecom) initiative, as well as on the original DARPA project.


Alan has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, and a Master of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering specializing in Photonics from the University of Victoria. Alan is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia. He has been a member of the IEEE for over 35 years, speaking at conferences throughout the world and has held various executive positions including Chairman of the Victoria Section.


Alan sits as an Observer on the Rx Networks, SecureKey and Veracode Board of Directors, as well as sitting on the advisory board of the Continuing Studies Program at the University of British Columbia in Internet Administration and e-Business. Prior Board roles include Ruckus Wireless, SentitO Networks and Jajah.


Rob Peets, MBA, CFA


Rob is responsible for the evaluation of investment opportunities across a wide range of synergistic industries, as well as co-ordinating the financial analysis and valuation of prospective investment opportunities. Since joining TELUS in 2007, Rob has held positions in Consumer Product Development (Optik TV and Satellite TV) and Capital Forecasting and Governance. Prior to TELUS, he was an Assistant Vice President within the Technology Corporate Finance group at an international accounting firm and an Equity Research Analyst covering publicly listed Technology, Medical and Industrial small cap companies. Rob has an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, is a CFA Charterholder and a member of the Vancouver CFA Society.


Rob sits as an Observer on the board of Sprout Wellness Solutions.

Vijay Grover

Financial Anaylist

Vijay is responsible for generating leads and identifying potential investment opportunities.  He is also responsible for analysing business plans and preparing finacial models and shares responsibility of the fund's portfolio management and governance activities.  Before joining TELUS Ventures in 2014, Vijay worked in the Investment Banking and Venture Capital Industry in India since 2009.  He has also worked in the IT industry with Infosys and Oracle for 4 years.  Vijay has an MBA from Indian Institue of Calcutta, India and is a CFA Charter holder.


Iris Benbassat

Executive Assistant and Office Manager

Iris is responsible for managing the governance, information and documentation flow of all Portfolio companies, assisting in the tracking of all deal flow, budget, various projects and office management.  Iris joined TELUS Ventures in 2003.  Prior to TELUS, she spent 6 years at Electronic Arts working on the largest Franchise - FIFA Soccer - as a Production Co-ordinator, Iris was responsible for team mangement, budget & event planning.  Prior to that, Iris worked for 11 years in several positions from Manufacturing to Customer Services for Mobile Data International later acquired by Motorola.
