With the growing popularity of new communications services, the demand for new numbers will soon exceed the supply. The solution: 10-digit dialing — the area code followed by the telephone number — for all local British Columbia and Alberta business and residential communications.

How does this affect me?
After September 8 - 12, 2008, you won't be able to make 7-digit local calls, but will have to dial the area code in front of the 7-digit phone number. You should plan ahead to ensure your telecommunications services are ready for the change.

To help customers prepare, the industry is phasing in a 'permissive dialling period' between June 23 and 28, 2008. During that period, when you dial 7 digits for a local call you will hear a network announcement reminding you to use 10-digit dialing the next time you make a local call, and then your call will be connected. Please note that data transmissions may be affected by the announcement, making it vital that you reprogram your phones and communications equipment as soon as possible. The announcement will no longer come on once full 10-digit dialing is phased in over a week in September.

If you make a 7-digit local call after late June, 2008
You will hear a recorded message reminding you to dial all 10 digits the next time. Warning! This message may disrupt data transmission in certain cases (Internet, fax machines, etc.).

If you make a 7-digit local call after September 8 - 12, 2008
You will hear a network announcement asking you to hang up and redial using the area code.

If you are applying for a new phone number
You may receive a new number with one of the new area codes if no current area code telephone numbers are available.

Important information:

  1. You will not be required to change your existing telephone number
  2. The geographic boundaries that govern long distance will not change
  3. All 3-digit numbers, including 211, 311, 411, 611, 811, 911 emergency service (where applicable) will remain the same

Helpful tips

  1. Start making the necessary changes right away.
  2. Reprogram various communications systems and equipment including:
    1. Speed dial lists
    2. Modems and Internet connections
    3. Telephones, including call options and functions (e.g. call forwarding)
    4. Computers and fax machines
    5. Databases
    6. Auto-dial systems
    7. Cellular phones and other wireless devices
  3. Contact your alarm company to ensure that your security systems are set up for 10-digit dialling.
