TELUS Next Generation Network

TELUS was one of the first major telecommunications providers in the world to deploy an IP (Internet Protocol) based "Next Generation Network" that was engineered from the start to be a carrier-class common infrastructure for carrying all forms of current and future communication including voice, data and video. And TELUS was also one of the first companies in the world to migrate long-distance voice calls from traditional TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) network to carrier-grade Voice over IP calls carried over its new IP-based Next Generation Network..

TELUS' Next Generation Network is significant from 3 different perspectives. First for our customer base it enables TELUS to develop and deliver innovative solutions. This is one of our strategic imperatives and is a demand that customers have placed upon us. Second, it's about efficiency, that is, capital and operating efficiency. And third and equally important is our process with which we are implementing NGN. We are literally simplifying the network and as a result we end up having better delivery of our product and services over our infrastructure as well as better support for our customer base.

TELUS' Next Generation Network is based on ultra high-speed Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical fiber transport network, Internet Protocol (IP) routers, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), and Quality of Service (QoS) to provide a single network platform for high quality voice, data and video. NGN delivers the flexibility and innovation of Internet network technologies with the consistency, reliability and quality of service of circuit-switched telecom network technologies.

In addition to migrating voice calls to IP, TELUS is also developing and preparing advanced new "Next Generation" application and services. These new applications and services, including IPTV for broadcast TV and on-demand video, represents TELUS' transformation into a "Next Generation Service Provider".
