$60,000 gift from TELUS’ TV for Good campaign helps purchase new
Bookmobile for the Lethbridge Public Library
Lethbridge, AB – TELUS is contributing $60,000 to the Lethbridge Public Library thanks to TELUS’ TV for Good campaign. The six-month campaign gave $100 towards the Lethbridge Public Library’s Bookmobile Replacement Project for every new customer who signed up for Optik TV in Lethbridge.
The funds will be used to help purchase and outfit the new Bookmobile, which will continue to get out to families and seniors who have a difficult time driving to a library. The goal is to put books in the hands of readers and create a community of avid book lovers regardless of their location. The Bookmobile also helps those schools who have a smaller library collection or families learning a second language to access pre-school books for their children.
“Libraries today are about more than books, we are about creativity, learning, and exploring the wonderful world of information in all its forms. The new bookmobile will be a library on wheels with a wider range of services and collections than possible with our 27 year old well-loved bookmobile,” said Todd Gnissios, Director & CEO of the Lethbridge Public Library. “We are very grateful for the support of TELUS, the Government of Alberta, the City of Lethbridge and the many residents who have donated to the bookmobile replacement project.”
With help from TELUS funding, the new Bookmobile will feature interchangeable book collections, wheelchair access, a public computer lounge, mobile public printing, a hot beverage machine and a pull-out seating area. It will enable those with mobility concerns, small children, seniors and people on the go to have full and equal access to the library services they need and enjoy.
“I look back when I was a kid and being almost as excited when the bookmobiles showed up in my neighbourhood as I was when the ice cream truck came down the street. And I remember taking my own kids to the library and showing them the value of book-lending,” said Fred Weinheimer, TELUS general manager, Customer Solutions Delivery for Alberta South. “In today’s world, books and technology go hand in hand as key success factors in learning, making access critically important. Thanks to our customers in Lethbridge who chose to purchase Optik TV while helping fund this important project for the community, especially for our kids.”
Since 2000, our TELUS family of more than 260 employees and retirees in Lethbridge have contributed more than $125,000 through Team TELUS Charitable Giving and volunteered about 29,000 hours to Lethbridge charities and community organizations including the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization, Lethbridge and District Humane Society and Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation. TELUS is also investing $8 million in Lethbridge in 2012 to expand 4G LTE – the fastest wireless technology in the world – to the community and introduce Optik TV to even more homes.
About the Lethbridge Public Library
Lethbridge Public Library exists to provide residents and guests connections to a universe of ideas, resources, information, entertainment and experience in a vibrant setting. It is the community’s gateway to literacy and to life-long education and learning. Libraries are innovative when it comes to adapting to change, whether it’s new technology or just providing an equal playing field. Over the years, Lethbridge Public Library has become known for eResources; providing a gathering place for the community; facilitating life-long learning experiences; offering computer access and so much more. So this year, the Library once again took the leap of incorporating change by providing Lethbridge with services that make people’s lives just that little bit brighter - the hottest box office movies to borrow; an outdoor national festival (celebrating reading, advocating literacy) to participate in and a commitment to continue to offer the best experiences - whether it’s a librarian’s expertise, children’s storytime or a beautiful, welcoming space in which to study, research, relax and enjoy life.
