TELUS unleashes Optik TV in Nanaimo

TELUS celebrates bringing new choice for TV service with a new campaign supporting the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital

Nanaimo, B.C. – TELUS Optik TV has arrived in Nanaimo, for the first time giving residents a real choice of where to get TV service. Nanaimoites will now be able to enjoy Optik features like setting PVR recordings from a smartphone or laptop, previewing movie trailers before renting a Movie On Demand and the ability to access PVR recordings from any TV in the home.

To mark the launch of Optik TV and in support of TELUS' philosophy to “give where we live”, TELUS will donate $25* to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for every new customer signing up for Optik TV or activating a smartphone in Nanaimo.

“The impressive features and unmatched flexibility of Optik is changing the way we watch TV and we’re delighted to bring TELUS’ all digital Optik TV to Nanaimo households as we continue to invest in this advanced technology for all our customers across B.C.,” said Ray Lawson, TELUS general manager for Vancouver Island. “The TELUS team also feels privileged to contribute to the development of the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, in celebration of every new customer who takes advantage of this new suite of home entertainment services. Expanding our community health facilities is vitally important in helping to keep our community members close to their homes and families while receiving treatment.”

This new campaign will help fund the Child and Family area of the new Emergency Department of the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, a quiet space located outside of the general triage area designed specifically for young patients and their families awaiting treatment.

“The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation is honoured to partner with TELUS as they continue their commitment to help the individuals they serve,” said Maeve O’Bryan, President of the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. “Proceeds from this generous campaign will provide lifesaving equipment and services in our Child and Family area of the New Emergency Department at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH), the referral hospital for all communities outside of the Capital Region on Vancouver Island. We are very grateful to TELUS for supporting the community’s needs in such a substantial way. Thank you TELUS!”

This year TELUS will invest $9.6 million in Nanaimo to further expand and enhance its wireless and wireline networks. The company has invested more than $26 billion in infrastructure and operations across British Columbia since 2000 and is investing a further $3 billion over the next three years to increase Internet speeds, introduce Optik TV to more communities, and expand its 4G wireless network. In fact, by the end of 2012, TELUS will expand the reach of its Optik TV service to reach 1.3 million B.C. households.

Since 2000, TELUS, its team members and retirees have contributed more than $400,000 and volunteered about 46,000 hours of service to Nanaimo charities and community organizations.

The campaign is available to all Nanaimo residents who activate a TELUS smartphone or subscribe to Optik TV between June 6, 2012 and December 6, 2012, up to a maximum of $330,000. To order TELUS TV or for more information, please visit telus.com/tv or call 310-MYTV (6988).
