TELUS investment expands wireless service in Peace River

Peace River, B.C. –TELUS has invested $225,000 in a cell site near East Pine to expand wireless coverage along John Hart Highway between Chetwynd and Groundbirch. Located south of Chetwynd Pulp Mill Road and Highway 97, this site now brings British Columbia's biggest and fastest mobile network to local residents and travelers.

“The investment we have made in the Peace River region fills a significant gap in wireless coverage along a major thoroughfare,” said Chris Jensen, TELUS general manager for northern B.C. “At TELUS, we know how important wireless services are, and are investing billions of dollars in bringing them to our customers across Canada. The East Pine site gives people the convenience of making wireless calls from wherever they are, expands access to 911 and enables great broadband service where it may not be possible to build wired Internet access.”

In 2010 TELUS invested more than $650 million in B.C. on advanced wireline and wireless broadband networks. This cell site is just one of more than 80 installed across the province in 2010.

Since 2000, TELUS, its team members and retirees have contributed $80 million to charitable and not-for-profit organizations and volunteered two million hours of service to local communities in B.C.

Two new TELUS-powered apps for a healthy lifestyle

TELUS teams up with ACTI-MENU for the “Quit to Win! Challenge” and “5/30 Health and Wellness Challenge”

Montréal, Quebec – TELUS and ACTI-MENU today announced the launch of two new mobile apps designed to help people take charge of their health: “Stop Smoking” and “mobile30.” Powered by TELUS, these motivational tools are an aid to Quebeckers who want to quit smoking or track their daily physical activity. Participants in the “Quit to Win!” and “5/30 Health and Wellness” challenges can download these new apps free of charge on their Apple iPhone.

“At TELUS, we believe that technology can be a powerful tool for people who want to adopt a healthy lifestyle and manage their health proactively,” said Sebastien Prevost, vice-president, Consumer Health for TELUS. “With the Stop Smoking and mobile30 apps, participants have all the advantages of mobility in the palm of their hand. Partnering for a second year with ACTI-MENU is just one more step in our ongoing commitment to help transform healthcare through innovative technology.”

Quit to Win! participants and anyone who downloads the Stop Smoking app can create a group of friends―smokers or non-smokers―who support them while they quit. The application lets participants share their victories and challenges with members of the group, who can in turn send congratulatory messages and words of encouragement.

The mobile30 app is associated with the 5/30 Health and Wellness challenge. The app calculates the physical efforts expended by participants in the challenge, whether through exercise or regular day-to-day activity. It also measures the number of calories burned during workouts, for better evaluation of the results of their efforts.

“At ACTI-MENU, we believe that every person can have a significant influence over their health and quality of life by adopting preventive behaviors and making good choices,” said Dr. Louis Gagnon, president of ACTI-MENU. We are thrilled about our partnership with TELUS, an enterprise that shares this vision. These two new apps are additional tools that will help Canadians to take charge of their health.”

Participants in the Quit to Win! Challenge and 5/30 Health and Wellness Challenge will be able to download the TELUS-powered apps from the Apple App Store. The applications will soon be available for other platforms, including BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 and Android.
