TELUS volunteers to answer calls and take pledges; company also to present cheque for $25,000

Ottawa, ON – TELUS is proud to sponsor today's 2005 Ottawa Heart Institute Telethon, providing its state-of-the-art call centre services to the world-renowned hospital's premiere annual fundraising event. More than 20 TELUS volunteers will answer calls and take pledges to raise funds for the heart institute.

“TELUS is proud to support world-class health care services in Eastern Ontario through our participation in the Heart Institute Telethon,” says Janet Yale, executive vice president, Legal, Government and Regulatory Affairs. “It's a part of our commitment to becoming Canada's premiere corporate citizen.”

The 14th Heart Institute Telethon is working to meet or beat the record-setting $3.8 million raised last year. The telethon, the Heart Institute's largest single fundraising event of the year, airs live on Sunday from Ottawa's Brookstreet Resort and is broadcast from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on CJOH-TV in Ottawa.

TELUS is providing long distance and telephone access for the telethon's call centre, facilitating up to 414 simultaneous callers. TELUS is also partnering with Mitel for PBX and call centre software to accommodate 100 volunteer pledge-takers on the phone lines. Up to 360 callers can remain in queue. Ms. Yale and Mike Martin, regional vice president, TELUS Business Solutions, will present a cheque for $25,000 on-air to Tom Hewitt, president of the Heart Institute Foundation, an amount reflecting the value of services.

Along with Ms. Yale and Mr. Martin, more than 20 Team TELUS volunteers are staffing the phone lines during the Telethon's peak hours. “It's inspiring to see the values of volunteerism and community spirit in action for a good cause,” says Ms. Yale.
