Rimouski, Québec - As part of the process involved in bolstering its presence in Montreal and Québec City, TELUS Québec has acquired a majority of the AXXENT company's Québec-based assets through interim receiver PricewaterhouseCoopers. AXXENT was one of Canada's largest competitive local exchange carriers (CLEC). This transaction makes TELUS Québec owner of 15 colocation facilities along with their equipment, as well as 23 other sites situated in the greater Montreal and Québec City regions.
This acquisition, which fits into TELUS Québec's major market development plan, buttresses its province-wide deployment strategy and supports its metropolitan sales force. "The purchase of AXXENT's sites and some of its equipment comes just as the right time for us," says Louis Morin, vice president, Business Market. "We will be able to advance our development plan - which already provided for the implementation of such sites in two of Québec's main urban hubs - by about a year." The transaction, subject to the usual judicial approvals, will let TELUS Québec provide coverage to 70% of the business community in greater Montreal and Québec City.
Purchase of an automatic switch
TELUS Québec has also completed acquisition of a DMS 500 switch from Nortel that will be placed in service in Montreal this fall. "This acquisition lets us substantially boost network capacity and robustness," says Dominique Jalbert, vice president, Technology and Operations. "We are also saving on the transport of local calls between our different central offices and their remote units, as well as on the transport of toll calls."
TELUS Québec, a member of the TELUS family, operates a network renowned for being one of the most modern in North America and offers its customers a wide range of equipment and state-of-the-art communications services, a host of local telephone services and competitive long-distance calling plans. It also provides its business customers with the latest in IT, telecom and e-commerce technologies.
