Clearnet PCSTM offers Albertans powerful new digital services at no extra charge

CALGARY, Alberta — Clearnet Communications Inc. (“Clearnet”) today turned on fully digital Clearnet PCS service in Calgary, offering clients throughout the metropolitan area an array of enhanced digital calling features and services at far less than the cost of traditional cellular.

Clearnet brought its digital PCS service to Alberta with the launch of Clearnet PCS in Edmonton last fall. While the company launched analogue service in Calgary at the same time, Clearnet PCS clients in Calgary can now enjoy all the calling benefits offered by fully digital Clearnet PCS, including unsurpassed call clarity, enhanced call security, e-mail messaging, longer battery life and no-charge services such as calling line ID. Both current and future clients automatically receive all those digital benefits at no additional charge using the existing Clearnet PCS dual-mode phone.

“Clearnet has made owning a wireless phone in Alberta more affordable, straightforward and fair than ever before,” said George Cope, Clearnet's President and CEO. “With our all-digital capability in both Calgary and Edmonton, Clearnet PCS clients pay far less for far better service than they ever did with analogue cellular. The functionality, security and affordability of Clearnet PCS has made analogue cellular phones obsolete.”

Clearnet now offers fully digital PCS service to 11.4 million Canadians in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Ottawa, Montréal, Toronto and Ontario's Golden Horseshoe area. But Clearnet's service area actually covers more than 90 per cent of the Canadian population. Thanks to Clearnet's remarkable dual-mode phone, built exclusively for Clearnet by Sony, Clearnet PCS works everywhere in Canada that cellular does. In Alberta, Clearnet PCS dual-mode phones operate in a long list of centres beyond Calgary and Edmonton, including Cold Lake, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Jasper, Lethbridge, Lloydminster, Medicine Hat and Red Deer.

Record-setting PCS Launch

“There has been record-breaking response in the marketplace to the launch of Clearnet PCS across Canada. We're delighted we can now offer the full functionality of digital PCS to the people of Calgary,” said David Christie, Clearnet's Vice President, Western Region. In what is believed to be the most successful PCS launch ever recorded by a North American wireless operator, Clearnet recorded more than 50,000 new PCS subscribers in the 75 days between the October 15 launch of Clearnet PCS and the Company's December 31 year-end, giving Clearnet more than 150,000 total subscribers at the end of 1997.

Buying Clearnet PCS is the fairest purchasing experience ever known in wireless communications. In addition to doing away with activation fees and long-term contracts, Clearnet also offers a 30-day money-back phone guarantee and no-charge digital features such as calling line ID and call waiting services, and voice mail at no extra charge. And Clearnet is the only wireless operator in Canada that bills all calls, both local and long distance, in one-second increments from the very first second.

The suggested retail price for a Clearnet PCS phone is $149.99 and talktime plans are both affordable and straightforward. The TALKTM plan costs just $20 per month and includes 100 minutes per month of airtime anytime day or night. The TALK-A-LOTTM plan costs just $30 per month and offers unlimited weekend calling, plus 100 minutes per month of airtime any other time day or night.

Additional talk time on both plans is just 20 cents a minute and long-distance in Canada and the US is an additional 20 cents per minute. Each is charged by the second from the very first second, resulting in savings of approximately 20 per cent compared to per-minute billing. And just to make things more personal, Clearnet gives all clients unlimited local calling on their birthdays every year — a world first in wireless.

Activating a Clearnet PCS phone couldn't be easier. Clients need only visit a Clearnet PCS retailer or dealer, buy their phone, take it home and call Clearnet's activations centre to set up an account. In Alberta, Clearnet PCS is available at retail outlets operated by Batteries & Beyond, Battery Depot, Canadian Tire, Computer City, Doppler Computer Superstores, Future Shop, Grand & Toy, London Drugs, Sony Stores, Staples and Wireless Wave. Clearnet PCS is also available at independent wireless dealerships, consumer-oriented Clearnet retail stores and Clearnet Business Communications Centre (CBCC) dealerships in both Calgary and Edmonton.

Clearnet (TSE, ME: NET.A; NASDAQ: CLNTF) is a leading Canadian wireless communications company that has increased its employee roster tenfold since 1994 to more than 1,800 people in locations across Canada, including more than 200 employees in offices, retail locations and switch centres in Calgary and across Western Canada.
