Mike i1000plus and i500plus to offer handheld data and Internet access

SCARBOROUGH, Ontario – Clearnet Communications Inc. (“Clearnet”) today introduced the Mike i1000plus and Mike i500plus, two new Internet-ready phones that integrate digital phone, Mike's Direct Connect two-way radio and alphanumeric paging with an Internet microbrowser, e-mail, fax and remote dial-up capabilities.

“The Mike i1000plus and i500plus phones are true mobile office systems. By integrating Mike Online Internet and data capability with the instant-contact power of Mike, they offer business clients the most potent all-in-one wireless power tools ever available in Canada,” said George Cope, Clearnet's President and Chief Executive Officer.

Effective immediately, the Mike i1000plus and i500plus connect with virtually any digital device (including personal computers, Personal Digital Assistants and industrial computing equipment) without the need for a modem, allowing clients to send and receive e-mails and faxes, surf the Internet or access corporate intranets and networks.

Later this year, Mike i1000plus and i500plus clients will be able to do all those things without connecting to an external digital device, and without the need to change or upgrade their phones. Both the Mike i1000plus and i500plus will enable clients to browse Internet, intranet and extranet Web sites directly from their phones using built-in “microbrowser” technology provided by Phone.com, Inc. (formerly Unwired Planet, Inc.). Clients will be able to access customized Mike Online information services, such as personalized news, sports, banking and stock information, and send and receive information directly to and from their phone.

Mike i1000plus: Internet in the Palm of Your Hand
The Mike i1000plus is a follow-up to the popular Mike i1000, launched in September 1998. The 142-gram i1000plus offers all the features of the Mike i1000, as well as enhanced Mike Online capability and new features such as a received/sent call list (which allows clients to view, dial and store the last 10 numbers made to or from their phone); missed call indicator; one-touch Turbo Dial; and Quickstore (which instantly adds numbers dialed to personal directories). The Mike i1000plus retails for $229, while the Mike i1000 now retails for $199.

The smallest integrated digital phones in the world, the Mike i1000 family offers a variety of unique features, including Canada's first wireless speakerphone. The i1000 design recently won a gold award in the Business and Industrial Products category of the 1999 Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) and was named “Best Cellular Phone” by Mobile Computing and Communications magazine.

Mike i500plus: A $79 Wireless Power Tool Released at an introductory price of just $79, the Mike i500plus is a sturdy, ergonomically designed handset that offers Mike Online capability; one-touch Turbo Dial; Quickstore; user-selectable font sizes for viewing on-screen text; and other Mike benefits, including call hold, caller ID, call forwarding, 100-member phone directory and selectable ring styles.

“Never before has such pure wireless power been available to Canadians at such an affordable price,” said George Cope. “At just 196 grams, the Mike i500plus is a compact phone integrating every wireless service clients might need – digital phone, Mike's Direct Connect, paging, fax, e-mail and Internet access capability – at a price that puts it within reach of virtually any business client.”
