New area code 236 in British Columbia

With the continuing popularity for telecommunication services, the demand for new phone numbers will soon exceed the supply in British Columbia.  Currently covered by area codes 250, 604 and 778, the solution is to add a fourth area code on June 1, 2013.  The new 236 area code will co-exist within the same geographic region as area codes 250, 604 and 778.

Anyone who already has a 250 / 604 / 778 area code number will keep the same phone number.

For local calls, continue to always enter 10 digits (area code + local number).

If you are applying for a new phone number:

You may receive a new number with the new area code if no current area code – 250 / 604 / 778 telephone numbers are available.

Important Information:

  • You will not be required to change your existing telephone number
  • The geographic boundaries that govern long distance will not change
  • All 3-digit numbers, including 211, 311, 411, 611, 811, 911 and emergency service (where applicable) will  remain the same.
