With the continuing popularity for telecommunication services, the demand for new phone numbers will soon exceed the supply in southwestern Ontario. Currently covered by area codes 226 and 519, the solution is to add a third area code on June 4, 2016. The new 548 area code will co-exist within the same geographic region as area codes 226 and 519.
Anyone who already has a 226 / 519 area code number will keep the same phone number.
For local calls, continue to always enter 10 digits (area code + local number).
If you are applying for a new phone number:
You may receive a new number with the new area code if no current area code – 226 / 519 telephone numbers are available.
• You will not be required to change your existing telephone number
• The geographic boundaries that govern long distance will not change
• All 3-digit numbers, including 211, 311, 411, 611, 811, 911 and emergency service (where applicable) will remain the same.
