In support of TELUS' vision to unleash the power of the Internet to deliver the best solutions to Canadians at home, in the workplace and on the move, TELUS launched Canada's fastest coast-to-coast fourth generation wireless network (4G) in 2009. This 4G network was based on HSPA+ radio technologies capable of delivering 21Mbps. That means you can enjoy 4G speeds in more places, no matter where you travel in Canada. TELUS fast 4G network lets you surf, download files and even tether faster than ever. Plus, with TELUS, you can roam internationally in over 200 countries, with more added all the time.
In early 2011, TELUS implemented the first North American dual carrier HSPA+ 4G network upgrade to deliver speeds of up to 42 Mbps.
4G, based on HSPA+ technologies, complements TELUS' existing wireless portfolio that includes Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), providing access to Canada's largest third generation (3G) high-speed wireless (EVDO) network and Mike, its industry leading Push-to-Talk network and business service. TELUS is continuing to evolve its technology leadership position to address traffic demand while offering customers the best selection of wireless devices and service experience possible no matter what network technology is running in the background.
In addition to the superior capabilities and higher capacity delivered by HSPA+, the infrastructure supporting TELUS' 4G network has facilitated the migration to next generation 4G+ LTE (3GPP Long Term Evolution) wireless technologies, which will further increase the capacity and speed of the network. It is availble in urban centres and is scheduled to roll out to the rest of Canada.
LTE technology supports manufacturer's rated peak download speeds of up to 150 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of up to 70 Mbps, ensuring Canadians have access to the fastest download speeds available.
TELUS investments to date in IP networks, in IP/fiber cell site backhaul, and in a SW upgradeable radio infrastructure will greatly facilitate and allow the rapid introduction of LTE in 2012, and further enable the evolution of the 4G+ network to LTE-Advanced technologies in the future. LTE Advanced will further increase network capacity, enhance performance, enable richer multimedia applications and services, and deliver a superior subscriber experience.
TELUS' evolving 4G+ network positions TELUS very favourably among Canadian operators to meet the capacity demands and challenges in the foreseeable future.
