How to get funded - Guidelines: Victoria
Community Board
Each year TELUS contributes millions of dollars to hundreds of organizations across Canada through our eleven local Community Boards. We choose to invest in those charities that best meet our funding guidelines and that clearly demonstrate the following criteria:
- focus on youth
- use innovation (social and/or technological) in addressing an existing or emerging issue of importance in your community
- fit one of our funding pillars: arts & culture, education & sport, or health & well-being in our environment
- the program will benefit from a donation, not a sponsorship
- your charity has demonstrated innovation and collaboration with other community organizations
- presents clearly defined and measurable outcomes
- provide services and activities without regard to race, religion, creed, sex or sexual orientation
- funding can only be made to federally registered Canadian charities
- funding per program is up to a maximum of $20,000
- charities are only eligible for one funding grant per year in each city; if a charity received funding in year one and the organization requests funding in year two, the Board will consider granting based on:
- an excellent status report of how previous funding was utilized
- there is a new component to the program that will enhance or expand its scope and the charity agrees to seek other funding to make the program sustainable
- if an organization requests funding in year three, the request for funding must be for a different program
- capital investment requests may be considered for new equipment, infrastructure, buildings, networks or renovations that directly support the well-being of the recipients of any local community organization. Funding for capital investments must directly support youth. An example of a viable capital investment request could be a playground, a computer lab, renovations to a daycare, etc.
- operating costs directly associated with a program are eligible for support, including salaries or space dedicated to a program. Operating costs that support the charitable organization as a whole remains ineligible, including utilities or overhead salaries
- community foundations are eligible for funding only if a specific program managed by the foundation fits within existing funding guidelines. Support for a capital campaign or general donation is outside of funding guidelines and therefore ineligible
Organizations and programs that would be considered ineligible for a Community Board donation:
- multi-year commitments
- programs that do not have a youth component
- sponsorship requests
- religious or sectarian organizations (except where they represent non-denominational community and social support services)
- political organizations and candidates, individuals and for-profit organizations
- competitive sports teams
- advocacy or special interest groups
- request for in-kind donations such as local or long-distance telephone services, or reduced telecommunication rates
- auction items, door prizes or giveaways
- donations to community foundations
- endowments or debt reduction campaigns
- operating costs not specific to a program, including utilities or overhead salaries
- goodwill advertising, travel expenses, field trips, tours, ticket purchases, retroactive requests, conferences, seminars, workshops, beauty pageants, funding for individuals, wilderness adventure activities, or events and activities that take place outside of Canada
Sponsorship Funding
We accept new applications for community sponsorships, at one time each year in order to help us prioritize the many requests we receive. You will be able to submit your community sponsorship request from August 1 – August 31, for an event or initiative taking place the following calendar year. (i.e. Currently, we will accept applications from August 1 - 31, 2012 for events and initiatives taking place in the 2013 calendar year. Sponsorship dollars for 2012 have already been allocated at this time.) Some examples of requests for financial support/sponsorship include: fundraising lunches and galas, as well as cause-focused walks, runs and bikeathons.
