Award highlights TELUS' environmental leadership and commitment to being Canada's premier corporate citizen
Vancouver, B.C. –TELUS has been recognized as the 2004 Best Environmental Corporate Citizen in the Corporate Knights third annual ranking of Canada's Best 50 Corporate Citizens.
Corporate Knights, a Canadian-based organization specializing in corporate social responsibility, compiled its list of Canada's 50 Best Corporate Citizens based on seven social and environmental categories including community, employee relations and diversity in the work place, product safety, business practices and international performance. The core research for the Corporate Knights Best 50 Corporate Knights was sourced from Innovest Strategic Value Advisors.
Some examples of the wide range of environmentally-friendly initiatives that set TELUS apart highlighted by the Corporate Knights include:
- TELUS has shown company-wide commitment and participation: TELUS' environmental strategy is part of all TELUS team members' work lives, from quarterly environmental risk and performance reports, to constant training with more than 6,000 environmental courses completed in 2003, to a unique online environmental database identifying risks, inventories and data sheets on approximately 3,200 sites.
- TELUS sets hard targets and reports transparently and clearly on all targets. Using a recovery and recycling program, TELUS recycled 7,183 metric tonnes of materials that may otherwise have become waste, resulting in a cost saving of more than $385,000 in 2003.
- TELUS demonstrates ongoing leadership in the environmental field. TELUS was a key player in the development of the Communications Environmental Excellence Initiative, a North American telecommunications industry collective committed to improving the sector's environmental accountability.
“At TELUS, we believe our efforts can provide a legacy that enhances the quality of life in the communities we serve and the world we share,” said Patricia Mackenzie, TELUS assistant vice-president of environment. “This honour acknowledges the collective efforts that all TELUS team members undertake to make the future friendlier.”
