TELUS expands IP leadership with second release of IP-One, the hosted and managed telephony service for business customers in Ontario and Quebec

Includes new versions of product and new capabilities including single converged network circuits supporting triple play of voice, data and Internet

Commercially launched in November 2003, IP-One is first carrier grade hosted and managed IP telephony service in Canada

Vancouver, B.C. – TELUS today launched the next release of its IP-One product, an enhanced version of Canada's first carrier-grade hosted and managed Internet Protocol (IP) telephony service.

“The next step in the evolution of IP-One is another tangible demonstration of TELUS' data and IP leadership position in Canada,” said Ibrahim Gedeon, TELUS' chief technology officer. “IP-One allows businesses to improve productivity, manage telecommunications costs, and accommodate an increasingly mobile and distributed workforce. The customer-driven enhancements in our new release are a great example of the flexible, open nature of IP-One, and the speed with which we have been able to bring this to market is indicative of how we will keep our customers competitive in the dynamic IP world.”

TELUS IP-One customers include leading corporations from the high tech, travel, and professional services sectors, including, Jetsgo, Borland Software, RSM Richter, and SUN Microsystems Canada.

The second release of IP-One provides business customers in Ontario and Quebec:

  • Service availability in 24 cities covering majority of Ontario and Quebec business centres.

  • Converged network services that allow TELUS to provide one network connection to provide voice, Internet and WAN services. The convergence of all three network connections into one “Smart IP connection” allows customers to reduce operational expenses by eliminating the costs associated with installing, managing and supporting three separate network connections.

  • Integrated messaging that allows users to use standards based e-mail such as Microsoft Outlook™ to retrieve voice mail. Messaging integration improves efficiency and easy access by allowing users to listen to their voice mail from their e-mail inbox, forward these messages on to other users, and file messages without having to worry about limits on voice mail messages.

  • With IP-One Release 2.0 customers have the option to choose the solution that is right for their business:

    • IP-One Enterprise is the flagship product of the IP-One family. This cornerstone product is a hosted and managed suite of IP applications that include IP telephony, voice messaging, tele-conferencing, IP-One Web Portal, automatic call distribution and crucial 911 service. IP-One Enterprise is specifically targeted at those organizations that want to leverage the benefits of network and application integration and require a full suite of telephony services.

    • IP-One Enterprise Lite, like Enterprise, utilizes a converged network and enhanced productivity features such as “Find-Me/Follow-Me.” The service is targeted at organizations that do not require all the features of voice mail, conferencing or call agents but want to benefit from the economic and productivity advantages of IP telephony.

    • IP-One Virtual consists of all the features and benefits of IP-One Enterprise but excludes network access. This product is intended for highly mobile organizations wanting the competitive advantage of IP-One's rich applications suite but who do not require connectivity.

IP-One Background
TELUS IP-One, first launched in November 2003, utilizes TELUS' Next Generation Network (NGN) to route calls and data, while providing business customers with a full suite of advanced application and services. IP-One integrates voice-mail, e-mail, and data via an easy-to-use online Web portal.

TELUS IP-One allows businesses to easily manage features such as call forwarding and contact lists, access their voice-mail as they would e-mail by clicking on a specific message, or conduct ad-hoc multi-party conference calls. The service also allows business customers the flexibility to shift employees and workstations without having to reconfigure network and telephony services, making it extremely time and cost effective.

TELUS IP-One is an open standards based hosted and managed telephony service, offered on a simple “per seat” cost basis, eliminating the need for capital investment in on-premise telephony equipment. IP-One provides all of the telephony features, voice quality and reliability of traditional voice telephony services, while enabling innovative features and enhanced applications.

TELUS' IP-One product family has been recognized with an Advanced Technology Solutions award by Cisco Systems Canada and was awarded the 2003 “Product of the Year” by Technology Marketing Corporation's Communications Solutions Magazine.
