Information Technology Association of Canada Corporate IT Hero Award - July 2008
TELUS was the 2008 recipient of the Information Technology Association of Canada Corporate IT Hero Award, in recognition of our role in creating Upopolis, the first secure online social network for kids in hospital.

At TELUS, we believe the innovative use of technology can improve the patient care experience for all Canadians, particularly children. Through this innovation, we give back to communities across the country in meaningful ways, and people are noticing.

The winner of the Corporate IT Hero Award is determined by a panel that assesses the nominees and their projects for innovation and creativity, as well as initiative and leadership, positive and measurable impact on Canadians, and effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability.

Corporate Knights Canada's Best 50 Corporate Citizens - June 2007
Corporate Knights, a Canadian-based organization specializing in corporate social responsibility, included TELUS on its 2007 list of Canada's 50 Best Corporate Citizens. Not only was TELUS distinguished on this list, we also received special mention in a Globe and Mail supplement delivered to Canadians across the country. The publication commented on TELUS' "sector-leading environmental management program."

British Columbia Medical Association Excellence in Health Promotion Award - June 2007
The British Columbia Medical Association (BCMA) presented TELUS with an Excellence in Health Promotion Award for our funding and support of TELUS Tour for the Cure, an interactive touring exhibit promoting the value and importance of breast health and screening mammography. The Excellence in Health Promotion Awards recognize individuals and organizations working to improve the health and safety of British Columbians.

PR News Corporate Social Responsibility awards - March 2007
TELUS was among 12 corporations honoured with a PR News award for outstanding corporate social responsibility (CSR). The winners were recognized for both the execution of successful CSR initiatives and for effectively communicating those efforts to various constituencies.

TELUS was selected as having the best corporate social responsibility report for 2005. According to a special CSR issue of PR News, the TELUS report successfully combines information on the company's financial well-being with a vehicle to showcase its good corporate citizenship. As CSR reports go, it's a pleasure both for the eyes and the conscience.

PR News is a leading publication covering the public relations trade. Its CSR awards program celebrates corporations that demonstrate how altruism, philanthropy and employee commitment to do good can make an impact on a community, key stakeholders and a company's bottom line.

Excellence in sustainability reporting - March 2006
TELUS' 2004 corporate social responsibility (CSR) report was ranked second among 114 Canadian corporate sustainability or social responsibility reports in a survey by Stratos, an Ottawa-based sustainability consulting firm. The TELUS CSR report highlights a wide range of internal and external initiatives such as the employee share plan, our Halon reduction plan and support for Arts Umbrella and other not-for-profit organizations. It is evidence of our fundamental belief that in order to do well in business, we must "do good" in the communities in which we live, work and serve.

Award for electronic financial reporting - Computershare and Tree Canada Foundation - 2005
In October 2005, TELUS was recognized for our participation in eTree. This innovative program was launched in 2004 by Computershare and the Tree Canada Foundation, a national conservation organization that supports companies in increasing stakeholder acceptance of electronic communications. Through eTree, when a TELUS shareholder registers for electronic report or statement delivery, a tree is planted in his/her name in one of Canada's urban forests. Nearly 10,000 trees have been planted in the name of TELUS shareholders.

Spirit of Vancouver Corporation Award, Vancouver Board of Trade - 2005
In September 2005, TELUS received the Spirit of Vancouver Corporation Award from the Vancouver Board of Trade. TELUS was recognized for funding and supporting the TELUS Tour for the Cure to raise public awareness about breast cancer and the value of mammography screening. An informative and interactive exhibit that travelled to 26 communities throughout British Columbia over an eight-month period, the TELUS Tour for the Cure promoted the importance of breast health and mammography screening.

The TELUS Tour for the Cure was a partnership between TELUS, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Government of British Columbia. The tour was viewed by more than 200,000 people.

Launched by the Vancouver Board of Trade, which facilitates the development of trade, commerce and travel in Greater Vancouver, the Spirit of Vancouver campaign promotes community spirit in the region.

Corporate Knights Canada's Best 50 Corporate Citizens - 2005
In May 2005, TELUS was recognized as Canada's seventh Best Corporate Citizen in the Corporate Knights Fourth Annual Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada ranking.

Corporate Knights, a Canadian-based organization specializing in corporate social responsibility, compiled its list of Canada's 50 Best Corporate Citizens based on 13 publicly available performance indicators that rate environmentally friendly programs, sound financial practices and corporate governance leadership.

TELUS selected for inclusion in FTSE4Good Index Series - The FTSE Group - 2004
TELUS was selected by the FTSE Group for inclusion in the FTSE4Good Index Series, which gives investors information on companies that meet globally recognized corporate responsibility standards - social, environmental and ethical. For inclusion, eligible companies must meet three areas of criteria: working toward environmental sustainability; developing positive relationships with stakeholders; and up-holding and supporting universal human rights. Companies must also disclose how they identify, manage and report their businesses' social and environmental material risks to their shareholders and other stakeholders. The FTSE Group is an independent company and global leader in providing equity and bond indices to investors.

Special 2004 Chair's Award for Community Commitment - Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, BC/Yukon Chapter - 2004
In October 2004, TELUS was awarded the Special 2004 Chair's Award for Community Commitment by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, BC/Yukon Chapter. The award recognizes TELUS and TELUS team members' contributions and support to the Chapter's foundation over the past 10 years. In particular, financial donations and participation in the annual Run for the Cure fundraising event, as well as TELUS' contribution to and sponsorship of the TELUS Tour for the Cure, were recognized. The combined donations total almost $900,000 over ten years.

Eterne Award - Tree Canada Foundation - 2004
In October, 2004, TELUS was honoured with the Eterne Award from the Tree Canada Foundation, in recognition of TELUS' sustained support of urban forestry and the sequestering of carbon in trees. The award recognizes TELUS' commitment to a clean, safe environment, including sponsorships of such events as the 'Greening of School Grounds' where TELUS partnered with Tree Canada and other sponsors to green school grounds in a number of cities, including Victoria, Edmonton, Calgary and Rimouski. TELUS was also recognized for our 2004 donation to the British Columbia Fire ReLeaf Fund, which assisted in the planting of trees in the Kelowna-Barrier area after devastating fires in 2003.

City of Calgary Mayor's Excellence Award - Community Programs 2004
In January 2004, TELUS received a Mayor's Excellence Award from the City of Calgary in the category of Community Programs for our involvement with the Book Bags for Kids program. The program addresses issues impacting childhood and family literacy. The philosophy behind the program is that literacy learning begins in the home and the community and as such, it provides students with increased opportunities to access quality reading materials and literacy support. TELUS provides a financial contribution which helps to purchase and distribute books to elementary schools across the city.

Best Environmental Corporate Citizen: Corporate Knights Canada's Best 50 Corporate Citizens
In June 2004, Corporate Knights recognized TELUS as the 2004 Best Environmental Corporate Citizen in its third annual ranking of Canada's Best 50 Corporate Citizens. The Corporate Knights ranking was based on seven social and environmental categories including community, employee relations and diversity in the work place, product safety, business practices and international performance.

The environmentally friendly initiatives that TELUS has undertaken include:

  • Company-wide commitment and participation. TELUS' environmental strategy is part of all TELUS team members' work lives from quarterly environmental risk and performance reports, to constant training with more than 6,000 environmental courses completed in 2003, to a unique online environmental database identifying risks, inventories and data sheets on approximately 3,200 sites.
  • Hard targets and reports transparently and clearly on all targets. Using a recovery and recycling program, TELUS recycled 7,183 metric tonnes of materials that may otherwise have become waste, resulting in a cost saving of more than $385,000 in 2003.
  • Ongoing leadership in the environmental field. TELUS was a key player in the development of the Communications Environmental Excellence Initiative, a North American telecommunications industry collective committed to improving the sector's environmental accountability.

Green Machine 2003: Canada's most environmentally friendly company
In October 2003, TELUS was named Canada's most environmentally friendly company by Corporate Knights, in its annual listing of 'green machines.' The Corporate Knights ranking was determined by three leading corporate social performance research firms that evaluated companies on a wide range of indicators, including land reclamation, energy efficiency, recycling and stakeholder relations.

North American Telecommunications Leader in Corporate Sustainability - 2003, 2002 and 2001
In September 2003, for the third year in a row, TELUS made the Dow Jones Sustainability Index list, a worldwide corporate sustainability ranking of companies that are recognized as economic, environmental and social leaders. Of the 317 companies included, we are one of 14 Canadian companies and the only North American telecommunications company listed. Companies are chosen based on their ability to create long-term shareholder value by embracing the principles of sustainable development by balancing economic strength with environmental and social responsibility.

National Post Business in the Arts Award of Distinction - 2003
In October 2003, TELUS received an Award of Distinction at the 25th Annual National Post Business in the Arts Awards. Honoured in the Most Effective Corporate Program category for our partnership with the National Arts Centre, TELUS is building on its legacy of supporting arts education in Western Canada with an innovative national program to encourage young people's passion and potential in the performing arts.

As a founding partner of the NAC's National Youth and Education Trust, TELUS sponsored the development ArtsAlive.ca, a website dedicated to bringing interesting and meaningful information about the performing arts to children, youth, families and teachers.

Created in 1978 by The Council for Business and the Arts in Canada (CBAC), the Business in the Arts Awards program honours businesses whose support of cultural organizations makes an extraordinary impact on the quality of life in Canadian communities.

Environmental Excellence, Gold Medal, and One of Top 10 Community Relations Winners - 2003
TELUS was awarded a gold medal for having the Best Overall Environmental Record of any company in the country, and ranked ninth of the Top 10 Community Relations winners, in the Corporate Knights annual ranking of Canada's best 50 corporate citizens. To compile the rankings, Corporate Knights uses three of Canada's leading corporate responsibility researchers to perform extensive research on corporate, social and environmental performance. Corporate Knights encourages companies to benchmark corporate social responsibility against the leaders. New Spirit of Partnership National Award - 2003
TELUS received this prestigious national award for our involvement with the TELUS Learning Connection (TLC), and was one of only five recipients to receive such an award. The awards program is a partnership between the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy and the Conference Board of Canada. The program recognizes those organizations that demonstrate creative, sustainable solutions to meet community needs and provide measurable benefits to the community.

TELUS Learning Connections began as an initiative to provide Alberta teachers with basic Internet training. Now in its sixth year, TLC services over 30,000 teachers and is an award-winning educational resource that attracts more than 2.5 million hits a month. The TLC website provides curriculum-based teaching resources, allowing teachers to develop content, share research strategies and access the most advanced teaching tools. Currently, TLC is getting interest nationally and is developing new programs that are cross-curriculum such as a unit on Plagiarism and Internet Safety.

Calgary Mayor's Excellence Award in Technology - 2003
Through this award, TELUS was recognized for our participation in "Wired for Words," an innovative, first-of-its-kind youth literacy portal that aims to help youth become avid readers. Endorsed by the Calgary Board of Education, wired for words helps teachers, parents and students build a passion for reading by connecting them with reading resources, in a safe and monitored environment. The site includes sections on book reviews, famous people talking about their favorite books, cool links to other great book resource sites and a monthly calendar of youth-focused literary events. In 2002, TELUS continued its proud history as an Imagine Caring company. Imagine caring companies make a commitment to contributing a one per cent of pre-tax profits to charitable organizations and activities; encourage and support employee giving and volunteering; support suppliers whose businesses are ethically and environmentally sound; and share their business expertise and resources with the community.

One of Canada's Top Ten Corporate Donors - 2002
TELUS was recognized by National Post Business magazine in December 2002 as One of Canada's Top Ten Corporate Donors. This honour acknowledges our active community investment and development work, as well as the financial and in-kind community assistance of $10 million TELUS contributed to charitable organizations, education, health and the arts across Canada in 2002. In other words, out of every company in Canada, we're number five or six with respect to our contributions back to the communities where we work, live and reside. TELUS approaches community investment as an opportunity to leverage our technology and expertise, focusing on helping communities succeed in today's knowledge-based economy. That is why the majority of TELUS' community investment is designed to help people help themselves, and is directly linked to data, IP and wireless programs.

Calgary Mayor's Award for Business and the Arts - 2001
TELUS received the Award of Excellence, Sustained Support, at the Calgary Mayor's Awards for Business and the Arts in April 2001. The award was given in recognition of our strong support of Theatre Calgary for more than 14 years, and our major sponsorship of the Student Matinee Series that allows 15,000 students a year to enjoy theatre. The nomination by Theatre Calgary indicated that TELUS' commitment shows an understanding and regard for the importance of the arts in our communities.

TELUS was also nominated by the Calgary Opera in the Sustained Support category for recognition of our consistent sponsorship and involvement in Calgary Opera since 1991, demonstrating the high value we place on the role of the arts in helping to build a stronger community. The Calgary Mayor's Awards program celebrates partnerships between business and the arts and recognizes corporations for their support.

Jessie Award - Patron of the Arts - 2001
In June 2001, TELUS received the Jessie Award for "Patron of the Arts" by the Jessie Richardson Theatre Award Society. Each year, the society chooses a corporation that is deemed to have made a significant contribution to theatre in Vancouver as the recipient of a Jessie - Patron of the Arts Award. The Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards program is an annual program that celebrates and promotes the outstanding achievements of the Vancouver Professional Theatre community.

Award of Distinction, National Post Awards for Business in the Arts - 2000
TELUS received the Award of Distinction in the Most Innovative Marketing Sponsorship category for our innovative approach to reaching the youth market for the arts. TELUS was recognized for our innovative sponsorship strategy in the development of the Vancouver East Cultural Centre's (VECC) TELUS Youth Pass, which gives young people the opportunity to attend any VECC performance for just $2. We were also recognized for our long-term support of the Vancouver Opera Touring Ensemble, which takes opera to young audiences throughout B.C. The Business in the Arts Awards program, which is conducted in partnership by the National Post and the Council for Business and the Arts in Canada, is an annual celebration of remarkable arts and business partnerships.
